Battle report - [UW] High ground 01/06

By Luke

For this battle we chose scenario “Take the Hill“ (see Download section) with 300 points armies. Syntha and Koralon have to capture the central scenery element. To do this they have to get the maximum amount of unit points in this area. Deployment areas are 6 inches wide.

Detachments
Syntha Army
3 Androsynth Pulse Rifle AP,
3 Androsynth Grape Gun AG,
1 Prometheus MLRS Pml,
1 Medusa (cal 1) M,
1 Achilles (cal 1) Ach,
1 Hercules (cal 1) Her

Koralon Army
4 Brood B,
2 Larvan (cal 1) L,
1 BroodMaster scythed talons (cal 2) BM,
1 Phazon (cal 2) P,
1 Stinger S,
1 Hydra Hy,
1 Breeder G,
3 Skull Swarms SS

Deployment
Phazon and Breeder hide behind the western wood. Other Koralon stand in circle (ready to phase out) behind ruins in center of deployment area. Hydra’s surface vents are placed near Phazon and at North-East Syntha player scatters his army with a strike force at the west of the map.
Legend : buildings in grey (2nd floor in black), cover in brown, woods in green, red star : wound, black card : casualties, black arrow : movement, red arrow : shot.
Koralon loose the initiative roll.

Turn 1
East of the table : one Androsynth approaches a vent to force Hydra to be revealed. Koralon player decides to attack here. Hydra charges at the Androsynth while another Androsynth, with an Interruption Shot, hurts it. No wounds during the combat.
Prometheus decides to send a pie right at the Koralon flock, while they are gently waiting for their portal. And that’s a hard strike : 1 Brood and Stinger died, 2 other Broods are stunned, BroodMaster suffers one wound and all survivors, except a Larvan, are panicked !
Then Skull Swarms advances (and they’re fast). Phazon creates a portal to teleport troops behind the central building, but this will be for next turn (little sync problem).
On Syntha side Medusa jump and land near the central building. West group goes ahead. Androsynth who was escorting Prometheus goes to help his comrades who are fighting with the Hydra.

Turn 2
Combat between Androsynth and Hydra ends tragically … for the Androsynth. But the other Androsynth avenges him by killing the Hydra with his grape gun. On the other side the Androsynth shoot down a Skull Swarm.
Koralons use the portal with no delay and put themselves in cover (both Larvans hide themselves under a gangway, in case of missiles launching).
Disappointed, Prometheus moves to get a better angle.
Skull Swarms keep on going.
Hercules goes forward, followed by both Androsynths. Achilles stays behind, ready to support his comrades.
The Breeder produces a Swarm which advances.
Medusa, in good shape, succeeds to make another jump.
Last, Phazon creates another portal to make troops arrive in the middle of Syntha group.

Turn 3
A Skull Swarm reaches the Hercule and makes him stunned.
Medusa manages to leap and reaches the woods.
BroodMaster uses the portal opened last turn and charges at Hercules (who is stunned). Fight is short and Hercules fells on the ground.
Achilles aims the BroodMaster, now alone and who have just one life point left! None of the 3 shots hit. But Achilles wins another action. Another try and this time BroodMaster is wounded. Miracle : the 10+ save is successful! Syntha just can’t believe it.
Another Skull Swarm reaches an Androsynth with no effect.
Prometheus, from his new position, sees the BroodMaster but misses his shot.
The fight continues. A Larvan uses the portal and charges at the Androsynth, but he doesn't manage to wound it.
The second Androsynth aims at the Broodmaster and misses him.
The other Larvan goes through the portal and succeeds where his brother has failed.
The Brood arrives last and charges at Achilles.
The 2 others Broods get back on their feet (or what they use to walk) and move, one toward the objective, the other toward the Breeder, now threatened by the Medusa.
On North-East Androsynths move to get the objective building in line of sight.
Phazon creates the return portal to allow fighters to retreat.

Turn 4
Let the carnage begin.
Brood is killed by Achilles, himself crushed by a Larvan, who is shot down by the Androsynth, who didn’t survive to the furious charge of the last Larvan !
Medusa continues the show and charges at the Breeder, leaping on it. But the Breeder wins the fight (???!!!).
BroodMaster, understanding that his luck may end some day, moves through the portal and enters the central building in order to be save from the Prometheus.
On East side gets rid of a Skull Swarm with his grape gun.
The Brood heading to the central building reaches his destination.
A little bit irritated, Prometheus annihilated a Skull Swarm.
Last Brood rejoins the Breeder, who had done very well alone.
Last, Phazon opens a portal between the woods and the objective building. Breeder goes through.

Turn 5
Synthas fire with no results.
Larvan and Skull Swarms approach their targets.
Brood goes through the portal and arrives on the 2nd floor, with the Breeder.
Phazon creates a portal for himself and reaches the building.

Turn 6
The Larvan charges at the Androsynth, with no result.
A Skull Swarm explodes right in the face of an Androsynth who gets stunned.
Prometheus doesn’t miss this time and kills the Phazon and a Brood.
The other Brood, understanding that is the last of his cast on the battlefield, becomes panicked.
Battle ends with a victory for Koralon, with the points of the BroodMaster and of the Breeder.

AFTERTHOUGHTS
This battle has seen many new units. In fact this was the first battle for ths models : Breeder, Skull Swarms, Stinger, Hercules, 3rd Androsynth grape gun, Prometheus and Medusa.
About Breeder and Skull Swarms I’d say they’re terribly efficient. Opponents have to take them in account, despite the low threat they represent. For comments about stinger we’ll wait for the next battle !
Others Koralons have (at last) been efficient in hand to hand fight.
During the first turn I have one more time make the mistake to set Phazon in Lock Fire while troops were in Snap Fire. Results : I loose a turn for moving. But in the end that was not so bad.
One thought for the BroodMaster who succeeds a 10+ save (kind of thing you shouldn’t rely on) and stays alive before being in cover.
Hercules has no luck this time (stunned before a charge), but I’m still sure it’s a big threat for my Koralons. Same thing about the 3 Androsynths Grape Gun (who will be certainly 4 next time).
Prometheus pie are really enormous (diameter : 6 inches). My opponent has already announce the plasma version will be tested next time.
That’s what we’ll see.
